Ikanos Announces Availability of Single-Port Velocity(TM)-Uni VDSL2 Chipset to
Enable High Data Rate for Fiber-to-the-Distribution-Point
(FTTdp) Applications
Velocity(TM)-Uni, Along With Ikanos Fusiv(R) Vx185 Home Gateway
Processor, Are Available Today to Enable Carriers to Deliver up to
300Mbps Aggregate Performance to Subscriber Base; See Demonstration

FREMONT, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 10/21/13 -- Ikanos Communications,
Inc. (NASDAQ: IKAN), a leading provider of advanced broadband
semiconductor and software products for the digital home, today
announced the immediate availability of a new member of its VDSL2 CO
(Central Office) processor family, the single-port Velocity(TM)-Uni.
When used in tandem with a Fusiv(R) Vx185-based home gateway, the
end-to-end solution is capable of delivering up to 300Mbps aggregate
data rate in FTTdp applications, covering a distance of up to 200
meters. While the carriers prepare for the availability of
products and gigabit connectivity, the introduction of Ikanos' new
single-port CO chipset provides them an immediate and cost-effective
path to bring fiber-like data rates to their subscriber base. An
additional benefit of deploying Velocity(TM)-Uni is its low-power
operation, which enables reverse powering -- in which the power
needed for the distribution point media converter is supplied by the
home gateway over the same copper pair carrying the VDSL2 service,
thereby reducing carrier operational cost. Ikanos will demonstrate
the 300Mbps performance of the Velocity(TM)-Uni CO processor at
Broadband World Forum 2013, held October 22-24, in Amsterdam.
Velocity(TM)-Uni is architected for applications in which very high
data rates are required, but achieving those rates with FTTH may not
be practical -- due to a variety of obstacles including high
installation cost, or a homeowner's refusal to allow trenching or
cutting through walls to extend fiber into the home. With Ikanos' new
chipset, carriers can extend fiber to a distribution point close to
the home, and then convert the optical signal to VDSL2 using a GPON
Optical Network Terminal (ONT) and a Velocity(TM)-Uni. The unique
architecture of the Ikanos CO and CPE VDSL chipset allows these rates
to reach an aggregate 300Mbps on a single copper pair, which is
comparable to data rates supported over FTTH, while maintaining full
compliance with the VDSL2 standard.
"Carriers are constantly looking for new ways to leverage the
installed base of one billion+ copper lines deployed globally to
deliver ever-increasing data rates and new revenue-generating
services to their subscribers," said Jag Bolaria, Sr. Analyst, The
Linley Group. "While their end game may be FTTH, they need to offer
progressively better bandwidth to retain customers while upgrading
their infrastructure to fiber. Ikanos, with its Velocity(TM) product
family, enables new levels of performance on standard copper lines to
meet the bandwidth requirements of carriers and subscribers."
"High-bandwidth consumer applications and devices are driving the
need for faster broadband networks, and carriers are moving rapidly
to re-architect their networks to meet the demand," said Omid
Tahernia, CEO of Ikanos. "At Ikanos, we continue to stay ahead of the
curve, and are delivering solutions that anticipate the market need
before it arises. While the standard body is putting the finishing
touches on the specification and the industry prepares for the
migration to gigabit access, Ikanos CO and CPE products are here
today and ready to enable carriers with the highest data rates seen
on standard copper lines to date, as the bandwidth wars continue to
heat up in the increasingly competitive broadband access
 Velocity(TM)-Uni samples are available now,
with volume production expected in the first quarter of 2014.
Complementary Ikanos Fusiv(R) Vx185 gateway processors are already in
volume production in VDSL gateways by multiple top tier carriers
