Cardiothoracic Center of Monaco Ensures Availability and Performance of Patient
Heart Monitors With Wi-Fi From Meru Networks
Meru's Uninterrupted Care Networks Addresses the Challenges Posed by
Harsh RF Environments
SUNNYVALE, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 10/07/13 -- Meru Networks(R)
(NASDAQ: MERU), a leader in Wi-Fi networking, today announced that
the Cardiothoracic Center of Monaco (CCM) has deployed the Meru
Uninterrupted Care Network to improve care for heart patients.
"We needed the most reliable and high-performing Wi-Fi available, to
provide us and our patients with the utmost confidence that any
issues detected by their heart monitors would be transmitted to
clinicians, regardless of the patients' locations in the hospital,"
said Stephane Rusek, Ph.D, CIO for CCM. "Due to the single channel
architecture, the Meru solution has proven to be the perfect choice
for the demands that we place on it in a harsh RF environment."
Located in Monaco, CCM is the premier medical institution for the
Mediterranean region. Physicians at CCM conduct more than 2,500
cardiovascular interventions and approximately 1,000 cardiovascular
surgeries every year. Patients at the clinic are connected to mobile
heart monitors, which gives them autonomy and mobility for
post-surgical care, while letting nurses and doctors continuously
monitor them. CCM needs reliable and pervasive Wi-Fi coverage for
such monitoring.
The location of the hospital poses unique RF challenges. CCM is very
close to a harbor, which amplifies RF interference. Due to low power
radios in the medical devices, access points in the network needed to
be placed closely together. A traditional Microcell based Wi-Fi
network would generate extreme co-channel interference in such an
environment. The Meru network at CCM, designed and deployed by
systems integrator I2S, is able to avoid such interference due to the
single channel, virtual cell option in the MobileFLEX architecture.
"Life critical medical devices need high reliability and pervasive
coverage," said Sarosh Vesuna, vice president and general manager of
the healthcare business unit at Meru. "CCM leverages Meru's Air-time
fairness architecture to provide an Uninterrupted Care Network for
their mission critical applications."
