HOUSTON -- September 24, 2013

The Japan-America Society of Houston (JASH) is pleased to announce that its
2013 Annual Gala will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at the Omni Hotel
Houston. This year’s honorary chair is Ambassador J. Thomas Schieffer, the
former United States Ambassador to Japan. Ambassador Schieffer served as the
U.S. Ambassador to Japan from 2005 to 2009 and was presented with the
Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service in 2009. Minoru
“Ben” Makihara, the former President and CEO of Mitsubishi Corporation and
current Senior Corporate Advisor to Mitsubishi, will be traveling to Houston
from Tokyo to join the event as a special guest speaker.

This year, the annual JASH Gala is themed “Strengthening Ties, Shaping the
Future,” as JASH celebrates 45 years of connecting peoples and cultures within
the Houston Community. Using the Japanese celebratory knot mizuhiki as a
symbol for the bonds between Japan and Houston, the event will be a festive
and colorful affair that highlights Japanese culture and the future of the
U.S.-Japan relationship of JASH within the Houston area.

The Gala benefits activities that include Japanese Language Classes, Japan
Festival, Youth Ambassador Exchange Programs, State and Regional Japanese
Language Speech Contests, and other business, cultural, and education related
programming.

George Avdey, President and CEO of Kuraray America, Inc., is acting Chair of
the annual Gala and a Japan-America Society of Houston Board Member. He
commented, “Our Annual Gala is a time when we celebrate the accomplishments of
those who have worked with JASH as well as come together to grow and expand
our future bonds within the Houston-area and share the unique and interesting
aspects of Japanese culture.”
