Western Refining Employees Support Firefighters’ Families
PHOENIX -- September 16, 2013
Phoenix-area employees of Western Refining, Inc. (NYSE:WNR) recently raised
$108,058 to provide assistance for the families of the Granite Mountain
Hotshots firefighters killed while battling the 2,000-acre Yarnell Hill fire
in late June.
After nineteen members of the Prescott Fire Department lost their lives in
that effort, Western Refining employees pulled together personal contributions
that would support the families left behind in the tragedy. During the months
of July and August, over 200 Western Refining employees wrote checks or made
payroll deduction donations, all of which would go to the families. Western
Refining pledged to match the employee funds raised.
“Giving back to the community is a tremendous part of our business culture at
Western Refining. This particular cause hit home in Arizona, and I’m proud of
our employees for stepping up in a significant and personal way to help the
victims’ families begin to move forward,” said Jeff Stevens, President and
Chief Executive Officer of Western Refining.
One Western Refining employee who asked to remain anonymous said, “It was an
honor for me to give what I could. I wanted to show my appreciation for the
sacrifices made by these firefighters who gave their lives to protect others.”
Gary Hanson, a senior spokesman for Western Refining, said the purpose of the
funds is to ensure that spouses and young families of the victims have some
immediate financial assistance, as well as to help with opportunities as those
young families grow older.
