PLX Features PCIe-Based Top-of-Rack Demonstration at Intel Developer Forum

PLX Features PCIe-Based Top-of-Rack Demonstration at Intel Developer Forum
SUNNYVALE, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 09/09/13 -- PLX Technology, Inc.
(NASDAQ: PLXT), the global leader in PCI Express(R) (PCIe(R)) silicon
and software connectivity solutions enabling emerging data center
architectures, today announced it will showcase at this week's Intel
Developer Forum (IDF) the company's first live demonstration of PCIe
as a standalone box-to-box fabric interconnect in a data center-ready
rack enclosure cabinet. The demonstration -- in booth 632 --
highlights how the universal PCIe standard used in PLX(R)
ExpressFabric(R) technology is earning industry interest as a
complementary fabric to Ethernet within the rack.
PLX developed the PCIe-based top-of-rack (ToR) switch box to
demonstrate rack-level consolidation and convergence into a single
interconnect technology. PCIe is well-established as a standard that
is already native on nearly all mainstream data center appliances.
Enabled by PLX PCIe Gen3 switch devices, ExpressFabric eliminates a
large number of expensive "bridging" devices (e.g., adapter cards)
that translate PCIe to InfiniBand, Ethernet or Fibre Channel. This
subsequently provides a high-performance, low-latency solution, while
offering significantly lower cost and power, with a reduced bill of
materials.
The IDF demonstration highlights clustering and I/O sharing via an
industry-leading PLX-designed ToR switch box connecting seamlessly
via PCIe to multiple 1U servers, all housed in a standard data center
rack enclosure. The rack is then connected to the cloud through
Ethernet (representing the rack-to-rack connection). This
true-to-life example in a real-time environment represents how
ExpressFabric is targeting small- to medium-sized data center
clusters.
"PLX is working with a number of global market leaders who will
service the enterprise data center as well as the public cloud with
ExpressFabric-enabled technology," said David Raun, president and
CEO, PLX. "These companies are our early adopters and we expect other
market leaders will follow as we release more PCI Express silicon and
continue to refine the technology."
PLX is the worldwide market leader with over 70 percent market share
in PCIe switch products, offering 18 ExpressLane(TM) PCIe Gen3
switches in production or sampling. The company has many more Gen3
switches in development to enable ExpressFabric, storage and other
key data center applications, and in parallel is planning for PCIe
Gen4 products.
IDF Details:
IDF is held Tuesday, September 10, through Thursday,
September 12, in San Francisco at the Moscone West Convention Center.
