GUILDFORD, England -- September 3, 2013
The average UK family owe Mum and Dad £7,813^1 for their taxi services every
year, reveals research from home and car insurance provider Allianz Your Cover
From lifts to friends’ houses and parties to pick-ups from after-school clubs,
the research finds that parents across the country are driving over 1,700^1
miles each year and spend the equivalent of four days a year waiting in their
cars to pick up their children.
Parents face a long wait however before they can call time on ‘Family Taxi
Service’, with the Allianz Your Cover research finding that parents are
ferrying their children around until they pass their driving test (40%), leave
home (19%) or can afford a car (17%). One in 10 predict that parents will
still be driving their children around until they are well into their thirties
and 15% don’t think they will ever stop giving their children lifts.
When asked what they expect in return for running the Family Taxi Service, two
thirds (67%) of Mums and Dads would simply want to be thanked, although over
half (55%) wish the kids would help out more around the house and one in five
(20%) want their children to contribute towards petrol costs.
It’s not just young children who rack up the mileage, parents with teenagers
(13 to 16-year-olds) are driving the furthest weekly distance of nearly 40
miles. In addition to the mileage, waiting time is draining the parent taxi
meter, as children aged nine to 12-years-old are most likely to leave their
parents hanging around waiting for them in the car, totalling two and a half
hours each week.
The top Family Taxi journeys according to Allianz Your Cover Insurance are:
1) Taking children to a friend’s house (50%)
2) Driving children to an after-school club (46%)
3) School runs (41%)
4) Lifts to parties (26%)
5) Driving children into town (22%)
Jon Lott of Allianz Your Cover Insurance said, “Mum and Dad’s Taxi Service is
getting UK families from A to B and with these trips totalling a mileage close
to 2,000 per year, it’s clear families are depending on a regular Family Taxi
Service to help manage their busy lifestyles.
“Our research shows there’s little let up for family drivers as the taxi meter
doesn’t stop when children grow up. In fact, one in five (22%) parents with
grown-up children (aged 24 to 30-year-old) think Dads will keep driving their
children around well into their 30s.”
To be a great “Family Taxi” driver, parents advise others to; ensure all
passengers are wearing their seatbelts (55%), have a good music playlist
(47%), check details with your passengers ahead of the lift so you’re not
unnecessarily waiting around (33%) and to keep food and drinks in the car in
case they have to wait around or get caught up in traffic jams (22%).
