CENTENNIAL, Colo. -- August 9, 2013

Ciris Energy is pleased to announce that Greg Jenkins, currently COO of the
company, will assume the role of CEO effective August 16. Concurrently, Jay M.
Short, PhD, the company’s current CEO will become Chairman of the Board, while
continuing to actively support the company's business and science activities.

Mr. Jenkins has served as the company’s Chief Operating Officer since Nov.
2012. Prior to joining Ciris, Greg has served in various executive roles
including President, Chief Executive Officer, Executive Vice President, and
Chief Financial Officer of several corporations including Jenkins Resources,
LLC; Syntroleum Corporation; El Paso Corporation; Santa Fe Energy Company; and
Hadson Corporation, where he was nominated as Financial World’s Chief
Executive Officer of the Year. His industry experience spans oil and gas
exploration and production, natural gas gathering, processing and marketing,
power generation, refining and chemical operations, as well as project and
corporate financings.

Dr. Short has been director of Ciris since the company’s founding and has
served as CEO since 2011. During his tenure as CEO, the company advanced its
lead ISBC technology to a regulatory-approved, commercial-scale project in the
Powder River Basin in Wyoming and achieved key milestones for advancing its
complementary coal to biogas and chemicals platform, Ex Situ Bioconversion
(ESBC). During this same period Dr. Short continued to serve as Chairman of
BioAtla, LLC in San Diego and Beijing. Prior to founding BioAtla, Dr. Short
was founder and President of the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation, and
cofounder, CTO and CEO of Diversa Corp., VP R&D and Operations of Stratagene
and Pres. of Stratacyte.

Mr. Jenkins remarked, “Ciris has a substantial opportunity to change the face
of the energy landscape both in terms of low-cost production of natural gas
from coal resources and via low-cost conversion of coal into industrial
chemicals. I am happy to have the opportunity to lead the company as CEO and
to continue to work with Jay and the rest of the board in realizing this
opportunity.”

Dr. Short added, “I look forward to continuing to work with the company in my
new capacity as Chairman. This transition provides me with more time for my
various activities and business obligations. I look forward to continuing to
collaborate with Greg and the team in our new respective capacities.”

Joshua Ruch, current Chairman of the Board of Ciris, noted, “The company has
made substantial strides in developing its technology and business prospects
under Jay’s leadership and direction. We respect his desire to transition the
role, and are pleased that he has agreed to serve as Chairman and to actively
work with Greg and the team. Greg’s industrial leadership experience is well
suited for the company as it transitions to commercializing its innovative
ESBC and ISBC platforms.” Mr. Ruch concluded, “We are excited to be able to
continue to access the talents of both Greg and Jay as Ciris continues to
pioneer in the application of biotechnology-based, cost-effective, natural
solutions for producing natural gas and chemicals from coal.”

About Ciris Energy, Inc.

Ciris Energy, Inc., a private company founded in 2007 and headquartered in
Centennial, Colorado, USA, is focused on enhanced natural gas production from
low-rank coals worldwide. Ciris Energy uses scientific innovation to
effectively harvest untapped energy resources that traditional methods leave
behind. Ciris is developing two independent technologies to efficiently
convert low-rank coals to natural gas. The first method, ISBC (In-situ
Bioconversion process), is a natural process that activates indigenous
microbes in coal seams. The second, ESBC (Ex-situ Bioconversion process),
combines coal sizing and depolymerization technology with microbial
bioconversion to generate methane and chemicals from mined coal. Both methods
reduce the cost of energy production and are environmentally friendly compared
to traditional methods. By rejuvenating unproductive coal territories through
proprietary technologies that stimulate and optimize natural occurring
processes, Ciris Energy is leading the way to efficiently produce natural gas
through clean and sustainable methods.
