Superhero, songwriter and calendar designer take top prize in national future
green leaders competition
Johnson Controls to recognize national student winners of Igniting Creative
MILWAUKEE, June 12, 2013
MILWAUKEE, June 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Johnson Controls, the global leader
in delivering solutions that increase energy efficiency in buildings, will
recognize three students – a superhero called Conservation Man, calendar
designer and songwriter – who promote environmental protection and sustainable
living as winners of the 2013 Igniting Creative Energy (ICE) Challenge. The
winners will be recognized at the 24^th annual Energy Efficiency Forum at the
National Press Club in Washington, D.C., June 13.
ICE is an educational competition that encourages students to submit creative
projects that demonstrate ways to live a more sustainable life and protect the
environment. This year's winners were selected from more than 1,000 entries.
Zachary Stevenson, third grade, Black Rock School, Thomaston, Conn. –
Zachary created a video that shows Conservation Man jumping to action to help
his family make environmentally-wise choices.
"I hope people learn ways to conserve energy around the house," said
Stevenson. "I learned that it is easy to reuse, reduce and recycle. It is
important to conserve energy because you can't make more fossil fuels or
water. Anyone can help save the environment – even kids!"
Morgan Colling, eighth grade, Houghton Middle School, Chassell, Mich. –
"Conservation Tips Calendar"
Morgan designed a calendar full of tips and tricks to save energy and to live
a more eco-friendly life. The stars of the calendar are her pet dogs, Bella
"I hope to inspire others not only to learn about conserving energy and being
aware of their impression on the environment, but to 'practice what they
preach' and take action," said Colling.
Caleb Zenobia, eleventh grade, Thomaston High School, Thomaston, Conn. – "The
Other Side is Sand" song
Caleb submitted an original song, "The Other Side is Sand."
"Music is what brings people together, and if we can unite people under a
universal goal to increase energy efficiency and use clean burning energy
sources, then we truly can save the future of our wonderful Mother Earth."
The Energy Efficiency Forum is a national event that promotes energy
efficiency by presenting global views and the resulting impact on the
environment, national security and economic growth. The 24^th annual Energy
Efficiency Forum will explore the role of energy efficiency in this new energy
