MHI Receives GTCC Power Generation System Order from Portland General Electric
Long-term Service Agreement also Signed
Tokyo, June 5, 2013 - (JCN Newswire) - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI)
has received an order for a 440 megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired gas turbine
combined cycle (GTCC) power generation system to be installed at the Carty
Generating Station being constructed in Oregon for the Portland General
Electric Company (PGE). A separate long-term service agreement (LTSA) for the
plant was also signed. The high-efficiency GTCC system will feature a
state-of-the-art MHI M501GAC gas turbine and an MHI steam turbine unit with
50-inch blades. The generating station is scheduled to go online in the summer
The order was placed with Mitsubishi Power Systems Americas, Inc. (MPSA) by
Abengoa, through its subsidiary in the US which is the engineering, procurement
and construction (EPC) contractor for the power plant project. Abengoa is a
globally recognized engineering company headquartered in Spain. The new power
plant is being built near Boardman, Oregon, to meet the growing energy needs of
PGE customers in the region.
The GTCC power generation system on order consists of an M501GAC gas turbine,
a steam turbine, a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and a generator. The
501GAC gas turbine will be manufactured at MPSA's Savannah Machinery Works
in Savannah, Georgia, and the SRT-50 steam turbine will be built at MHI's
Takasago Machinery Works in Hyogo Prefecture in Japan. The generator will be
supplied by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. After the plant begins operating
MPSA will provide the Carty Generating Station with comprehensive turbine
maintenance, repair and outage services, replacement parts, and dedicated gas
turbine remote monitoring under the LTSA.
The M501GAC gas turbine is one of the most efficient, large-capacity gas
turbines in the world. MHI has received orders for 77 units of the G series
worldwide, including 39 units in North America. The current order reflects this
excellent track record, as well as the M501GAC gas turbine's reputation
for superior performance. The next-generation SRT-50 steam turbine features
50-inch blades (at the last stage of the rotor) constructed of high-strength
material, and offers higher performance and generation capacity at lower cost
than units with smaller blades.
PGE is a fully integrated electric utility that operates numerous power plants
in Oregon. In addition to generating power, it also buys, sells, transmits, and
distributes electricity, and buys and sells natural gas. PGE also operates an
MHI-supplied GTCC power generation system at its Port Westward Plant, which was
delivered in 2008.
Gas turbine combined cycle power plants generate electricity in two stages
through the combined use of gas and steam turbines. By using high-temperature
exhaust from the gas turbine to produce the steam that drives the steam
turbine, combined cycle power plants achieve higher thermal efficiency, lower
fuel consumption, and lower emissions.
