Sumitomo Electric Announces Ku-Band GaN HEMT for SATCOM

Power Amplifier Offers Twice the Output Power of GaAs Devices

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 4, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Sumitomo Electric Device
Innovations USA, Inc. (SEDU), a leading provider of advanced RF, wireless and
optical communications solutions, has introduced its first Ku-Band GaN HEMT
power amplifier (PA) for SATCOM applications. GaN technology allows
significantly higher output powers—50W for GaN versus 30W for GaAs. Tuned for
operation from 13.75 to 14.5 GHz, the new SGK1314-50A PA is internally matched
for extendedKu SATCOM band to provide optimum power and gain in a 50-ohm
system.

"Our expertise in GaN technology offers new possibilities to SATCOM
applications. The new GaN PAs provide the ability to simplify the design by
reducing the number of required transistors," says John Wyatt, President of
Sumitomo Electric Device Innovations USA. "For example, the 50W GaN HEMT
replaces 2 GaAs FETs and also provides higher gain and efficiency."

Key Features/Benefits

*High-power GaN-HEMT reduces the number of PAs required in a system
*Internally matched for the 13.75-14.5 GHz SATCOM band to provide optimum
power and gain in a 50ohm system
*High PAE for efficient operation and lower power consumption
  *High gain – 8dB typical
