"We have made a difference in our streets and public spaces, but most importantly we are increasing awareness among youth and adults that littering is unacceptable, as we create a new environmental culture," said Mr. Salinas. The campaign includes a coordinated series of television spots and programs to increase awareness of the problem of littering and improper refuse handling in Mexico, as well as proposing practical solutions. Over 7 million people throughout Mexico participated in the cleanup day held on May 26. The zones targeted for cleanup included urban areas, rivers, lakes, beaches, parks and national monuments. In all, volunteers collected a total of 36,500 metric tons of garbage. The program is also being replicated in Guatemala, El Salvador and Peru.
