The Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education
(COAMFTE) has accredited Capella University’s Marriage and Family
Counseling/Therapy program. The 5-year accreditation, awarded without
stipulations, is the longest period of accreditation granted to newly
accredited programs. Capella University (http://www.capella.edu) is an
accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high
quality online degree programs for working adults. As of March 31, 2013, more
than 36,000 students were pursuing an online degree at Capella. The learning
and career outcomes of Capella’s students and alumni can be found at
www.capellaresults.org.

COAMFTE is a specialized accrediting body that accredits master's degree,
doctoral degree, and post-graduate degree clinical training programs in
marriage and family therapy throughout the United States and Canada. It is
recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) as an
accrediting agency for graduate degree and clinical training programs in
marriage and family therapy.

“The Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education
congratulates the Marriage and Family Therapy master’s program at Capella
University on receiving COAMFTE accreditation. The program’s offering of a
distance learning component will allow students interested in marriage and
family therapy more access than ever to training and education. The Commission
is proud to have the master’s MFT program at Capella join the ranks of over
100 COAMFTE-accredited programs,” said Colleen M. Peterson, PhD, the Chair of
COAMFTE.

Capella’s master's degree program in Marriage and Family Counseling/Therapy
(which is also CACREP-accredited) includes a rigorous combination of distance
education and face-to-face preparation. The program curriculum includes online
course work, residential colloquia, and clinical field experiences designed to
prepare students for state licensure eligibility. Students learn to apply
family systems theories and therapeutic techniques to address a wide range of
relationship issues and to assess and treat mental and emotional disorders and
problems within the family system. They integrate and apply research and
theories in the practice of marriage and family therapy, including
relational/systemic theories, theories of individual and family development
across the life span, and other foundational theories in marriage and family
therapy to clinical practice.
