Asda Money Offers Top Tips for Those Heading to London for the Marathon
Asda Money reveals that an estimated 37,500(1) amateur athletes, and
elite sportsmen and women participated in the 2012 London Marathon
and with high-profile figures such as Olympic gold medallist Mo Farah
in attendance at this year's event(2) on April 21st; the 33rd London
marathon could see a similar or greater turnout this year.
LEEDS, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwired) -- 04/22/13 -- As well as
those testing their endurance on the 26.2 mile course2 the 2013
Virgin London marathon will also be attended by scores of
well-wishers and friends and family members who will get to cheer the
runners on from the sidelines, and be right at the heart of the
action.
With this in mind Asda Money offers some tops tips3 for how
spectators can prepare themselves for the big day.
Plan your timings
If spectators are keen to see runners as they pass by particular
points on the course, then it is essential that they look at the race
timings guide to identify where and when they will need to be on the
lengthy marathon route stretching across the Thames.
Check public transport details before you leave
Getting to the London marathon via London Underground, South Eastern
and Docklands Light Railway (DLR) is advisable, as many roads will be
closed on the actual day of the race. As the London Marathon takes
place on a Sunday it is also important to factor in any planned
engineering works on the day, as these usually take plan on the
weekend. This could also include trains coming into London if your
journey begins outside of the capital.
As platforms and stations may become overcrowded due to the sheer
number of spectators attending the race, it's also important to
factor in times when stations may need to be closed for short periods
because of congestion.
Dress sensibly and travel light
Wearing comfortable clothing and footwear and a waterproof jacket are
essential on the day, to avoid getting drenched by potential April
showers.
Although you may want to bring essentials such as drinks and snacks
on your journey, leaving valuables at home and travelling light will
mean that you are able to move quickly and safely through the crowds.
