Teamsters To Hold Demonstration; Will Call On Republic Services To End Strike
McDonough Hauling Yard Workers Are On Unfair Labor Practice Strike; Workers to
Ask Company to Settle Labor Board Charges
(McDonough, GA) – Today at noon, sanitation drivers, helpers and mechanics
employed by Republic Services will hold a public demonstration at McDonough
Square. These workers began an unfair labor practice strike in McDonough on
April 15. They are exercising their legal right to strike in protest the
company's violations of federal labor law.
Republic Services broke federal law when it fired a worker because of his
support for the union. The company also broke federal law when it stopped
paying drivers for time they work while returning their trucks to the yard.
"The company could end this right now," sanitation worker Mondrez Flemister
has said. "We want to get back to work and keep our communities clean and
safe. But Republic needs to reinstate my co-worker who they illegally fired,
and they also need to settle the other illegal behaviors like when they
stopped paying us for work we do when we're assigned to help other drivers on
Republic Services also has yet to fairly negotiate a first contract with these
workers, who voted to organize a union in 2011.
