In an effort to further promote global sustainability best practices, Walmart
has developed The Walmart Green Room, an online platform with the mission of
creating a more sustainable world to help people live better. The site,
designed and developed by Rain, a NYC/Utah-based digital content creation
company, has facilitated a conversation on green living with hundreds of
thousands of companies and consumers all over the world.

“The Walmart Green Room has been an important resource for keeping the
sustainability conversation flowing between our customers, associates, NGOs,
suppliers, and the communities in which we serve,” said Brooke Buchanan,
Director of Communications & Sustainability at Walmart. “In 2005, we launched
our global sustainability program with three aspirational goals: to be
supplied 100 percent by renewable energy; to create zero waste; and, to sell
products that sustain people and the environment. The Green Room has been a
great tool in guiding us toward accomplishing these goals.”

The blog, which has enabled Walmart to become a prominent voice globally on
the topic of corporate sustainability, features contests, polls, and creates
interactive conversations to facilitate sustainable idea sharing between
Walmart and its readers. A development and management team at Rain oversees
The Walmart Green Room on a day-to-day basis.

“We wanted to create an interactive space for Walmart’s customers and
associates, as well as other companies and consumers interested in
sustainability, to both share and gain ideas,” said Nick Godfrey, COO of Rain.
“The goal was to position Walmart as a leader in corporate environmental
responsibility by producing content that not only promotes its efforts in
sustainability, but gives consumers and businesses the tools and knowledge to
drive their own efforts.”

Since its January 2012 launch, The Walmart Green Room has been well-received
in the environmental sustainability community. It won the award for best blog
in the 2013 CSR Awards blog category and was also awarded Gold award in the
Best Blog (Company/Organization) category in the 2012 Bulldog Digital/Social
PR Awards for Excellence in Online Communications.
