Scholarships and Accolades On the Menu for Female Law Students and Attorneys by the Association of Women Attorneys Houston Luncheon PR Newswire HOUSTON, March 19, 2013 HOUSTON, March 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --The AWA Foundation will be presenting six scholarships and five AWA Premier Women in Law awards at the Downtown Hyatt at 11:30 AM, March 20, 2013. The AWA is the only organization that focuses exclusively on the advancement of women law students, lawyers, and judges in the Houston area. "By profiling successful lawyers and students we believe corporations and other businesses will be more willing to hire, retain, and promote women lawyers and strive to eliminate subtle gender biases that might otherwise hamper those promotions," says former AWA President Ileana Blanco. This year the AWA Foundation is awarding six scholarships to deserving second- and third-year female law students at each of the three law schools in Houston. This year's recipients include: Syvondia Bailey and Kathleen Hogan from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law; Kelly Rae Ferrelll and Maryana Zaki from the University of Houston; and Jamie Godsey and Diana Lizmi from South Texas College of Law. "Each of the first-year students will receive a $2,500 scholarship while each third-year student will receive a $3,500 scholarship to cover their Bar Review course and related expenses," says current AWA President Cindy Diggs. "The scholarship recipients will also receive a free AWA membership for one year." The Premier Women in Law awards will be presented to: Wendy Daboval, General Counsel and Vice President of Chevron North America Exploration and Production Company; Clare H. Doyle, Deputy General Counsel for Reliant Energy; Kimberly Frye, Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Key Energy Services, Inc.; Charlotte Rasche, and Charlene A. Ripley, LINN Energy's Senior Vice President and General Counsel. About the AWA: The Association of Women AttorneysHoustonbegan in 1976 as a small group of women attorneys gathered in an empty courtroom to discuss ways to combine their strengths to improve opportunities for women attorneys and promote recognition of their capabilities. Today, the AWA has grown to a membership of 7,500 women attorneys, in Harris County alone, who host a variety of fundraisers, educational events and scholarships designed to empower women attorneys to maximize their potential for success. The Houston Chapter of the AWA sponsors the AWA Judicial Reception to honor members of selected judicial benches, the AWA Judicial Screening Committee, which offers candidates in all contested elections the opportunity to seek endorsement by the AWA, and the AWA Scholarship Committee, which selects recipients for the AWA Foundation Charitable Trust Scholarships.
