The industry’s only true 100-percent open source data platform powered by
Apache Hadoop, the enterprise-grade Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) for
Windows enables organizations to capture, process and share data in any format
and at scale. Built and packaged by the core architects of Apache Hadoop, HDP
includes all of the necessary components to refine and explore new data
sources, and find new business insights. As an ecosystem-friendly platform,
HDP extends existing investments in applications, tools and processes with
Hadoop.

According to IDC, Windows Server owned 73 percent of the market in 2012 (IDC,
Worldwide and Regional Server 2012–2016 Forecast, Doc # 234339, May 2012).
Hortonworks Data Platform is the first and only Hadoop distribution available
on both Windows Server and Linux, providing identical user experiences and
interoperability across both operating systems. Additionally, customers will
have complete portability of their Hadoop applications between on-premise and
cloud deployments via HDP for Windows and HDInsight Service. Already endorsed
by some of the largest vendors in the IT ecosystem, HDP for Windows offers the
millions of customers running their business on Microsoft technologies an
ecosystem-friendly Hadoop-based solution that is built for the enterprise and
built for Windows.

“As part of our approach to big data, Microsoft is committed to providing
customers with access to Apache Hadoop-based solutions,” said Herain Oberoi,
director of product marketing for Microsoft Corp. “The Hortonworks Data
Platform for Windows is an important step to make Hadoop accessible to as many
people as possible, and provides customers with a great Hadoop-based solution
built for Windows Server.”

“We continue to see growing interest in Apache Hadoop from enterprises eager
to store, process and gain business intelligence from data that was previously
ignored due to the limitations of traditional data management technologies,”
said Matt Aslett, research director, data management and analytics, 451
Research. “The Hortonworks Data Platform for Windows brings the potential
benefits of Hadoop to the Microsoft community, delivering a platform designed
to integrate with their existing Microsoft data management and analytics
tools.”

“Today’s news builds on our long-term collaboration with Microsoft and is the
next critical step in our strategy of broadening the reach of 100-percent open
source Apache Hadoop across the enterprise by enabling millions of Windows
users around the globe to benefit from this next-generation data platform,”
said Shaun Connolly, vice president of corporate strategy, Hortonworks.
“Hortonworks Data Platform for Windows extends the Hadoop ecosystem across the
Windows operating system, providing organizations with an enterprise-grade,
production-tested platform for big data deployments.”
