Pot Hole Problem Prevention from Asda Money

Pot Hole Problem Prevention from Asda Money

Potholes are a growing problem on the UK's roads, with motorists and cyclists facing an average of 6.25 potholes per mile(1). Asda Money looks at ways you can avoid potholes and the damage they can cause to your vehicle whilst driving.

LEEDS, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 02/14/13 -- Ministers have announced an extra GBP 215million for councils to carry out repairs but, with council chiefs warning that they already have a GBP 10 billion backlog of repairs; the peril of potholes doesn't look like being filled over any time soon.

Asda Breakdown Cover can help if you find your car is immobilised by a pothole, but there are a number of other practical steps you can take to help avoid problems.

Asda Money offers these top tips on how you can combat the pothole problem while driving this winter:

If you notice potholes on the road then you should cut your speed and drive carefully to help avoid the worst of them. Look out for cars in front of you swerving (there's a good chance they're driving around a pothole).

-- Try to avoid puddles, which can conceal nasty potholes.

-- Ensure your tyres are well inflated: the air pressure inside a tyre is
what helps to bear the vehicle's weight. If your car tyre is under-
inflated there may not be enough air to properly support the vehicle,
particularly when you come into contact with a pothole at high speed.

-- If you do drive over a pothole, pull over when it is safe to do so and
inspect your vehicle - particularly tyres - for damage.

-- A flat tyre may be obvious but if there is a bulge or visible cord
material on the tyre's sidewall, it should also be replaced immediately.

-- If you notice your car pulling to the side, your alignment may have been
affected. Your local garage will be able to fix this for you.
