Harper Government Announces Most Fuel-Efficient Vehicles for 2013

Harper Government Announces Most Fuel-Efficient Vehicles for 2013
OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 02/14/13 -- Mike Wallace, Member
of Parliament for Burlington, on behalf of the Honourable Joe Oliver,
Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, today announced recipients of
the 2013 ecoENERGY for Vehicles Awards at the Canadian International
AutoShow. These awards recognize the most fuel-efficient new vehicles
sold in Canada in 10 different classes. Mr. Wallace also released the
Government's 2013 Fuel Consumption Guide, which helps Canadians make
fuel efficient choices when deciding to purchase a vehicle.
"Innovative technology that was once only found on engineering
drawing boards is now in your local dealership showroom, making
energy-efficient cars and trucks a greater reality for Canadians."
said Mr. Wallace. "Our Government is pleased to highlight this year's
award recipients, who demonstrate how innovation is transforming an
industry while helping Canadians lower their fuel costs and reduce
greenhouse gas emissions."
The Most Fuel-Efficient Vehicles for Model Year 2013:

-- Two-Seater: smart fortwo electric drive
-- Subcompact: Mitsubishi i-MiEV
-- Compact: Ford Focus Electric
-- Mid-Size: Nissan LEAF(TM)
-- Full-Size: Tesla Model S
-- Station Wagon: Toyota Prius v
-- Pickup Truck: Toyota Tacoma
-- Special Purpose: Mazda CX-5

For the first time, battery electric vehicles were significantly
represented among the vehicles recognized; showing that innovation in
the auto sector continues to evolve.
Transportation is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas
emissions in Canada, and personal vehicles account for over half of
this energy use. The Harper Government has invested $195 million in
the ecoENERGY Initiatives, supporting its commitment to reduce
Canada's total greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent from 2005
levels by 2020. As part of this initiative, the ecoENERGY for
Vehicles Program provides Canadians and Canada's commercial fleet
sector with decision-making tools for buying and operating their
vehicles to reduce fuel consumption.
The 2013 Fuel Consumption Guide lists fuel consumption information
for new cars and light-duty trucks sold in Canada and will be
available at most new vehicle dealerships, motor vehicle licence
agencies, participating Canadian Automobile Association offices and
participating credit union offices across Canada.
"As part of the Harper Government's on-going commitment to help
Canadians save money, I'm pleased to announce that the 2013 Fuel
Consumption Guide is now available," said Mr. Wallace. "This guide
helps Canadians make informed decisions on which fuel-efficient model
best suits their needs, when purchasing a new vehicle."
Fuel consumption ratings for all 2013 model year vehicles are also
available on Natural Resources Canada's website at
vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca.
Consumers can use NRCan's online Fuel Consumption Ratings tool to
compare the fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions of new cars
and light-duty trucks sold in Canada. This tool allows Canadians to
conveniently search for vehicles by class, make, transmission or fuel
type and can display the results sorted by model, fuel efficiency or
carbon dioxide emissions.
