U. S. Steel Names Patrick J. Mullarkey Plant Manager -- Fairfield Tubular

(NYSE: X) announced today that Patrick J. Mullarkey has been named plant
manager – Fairfield Tubular Operations, part of United States Steel Tubular
Products Inc., located near Birmingham, Ala. effective February 1, 2013.
Mullarkey will succeed Dennis Quirk who has retired following 36 years of
"Dennis has served our company well during times of critical change with his
extensive and varied operations experiences in both our Tubular and
Flat-Rolled organizations and has exhibited an extraordinary commitment to our
safety program throughout his 36 year career. We wish him and his family all
the best in his retirement," said Douglas R. Matthews, senior vice president –
Tubular Operations. He also commented on Mullarkey's advancement, stating,
"Pat's broad operations experience throughout the company, particularly in the
welded pipe business, coupled with his strong leadership skills makes him an
excellent addition to the U. S. Steel Tubular Products leadership team."
Mullarkey, 55, began his career in the steel industry with Inland Steel in
East Chicago, Ind., in 1981 and moved through a series of supervisory and
management positions in the company's iron and steelmaking operations. In
1994, he joined Raytheon Engineers & Constructors as the lead engineer for the
blast furnace reline division and held that position until joining U.S.Steel
Mullarkey's first assignment with U.S.Steel was area manager-operating and
maintenance, South Blast Furnaces at Gary Works in Gary, Ind. After advancing
through a series of increasingly responsible managerial positions in
steelmaking and the 84" Hot Mill, he was assigned to Gary Works' #14 Blast
Furnace construction project in 2005. When the project was completed,
Mullarkey transferred to U.S.Steel's Pittsburgh headquarters to serve as
director-engineering project development. He was named vice
president-technology at U.S.Steel Kosice (USSK) in the Slovak Republic in
2007 and became vice president-operations for USSK in March 2009 with
responsibility for overseeing day-to-day operations of those facilities. He
assumed his most recent position as president of United Spiral Pipe LLC in
2010. As plant manager – Fairfield Tubular Operations he will report to the
general manager – Tubular Operations.
A native of Chicago, Mullarkey graduated from the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign in 1981 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
He earned a master's degree in business administration from Indiana Wesleyan
University in Marion, Ind., in 2004. Mullarkey, his wife, Carol, and their
daughter will relocate to the Birmingham area.
