the rising popularity of passive optical networks (PONs) for residential
broadband connectivity, the device supports Ethernet passive optical network
(EPON), Gigabit passive optical network (GPON) and Ethernet point-to-point
broadband connectivity with a single, highly integrated system-on-chip (SoC).
The 88F6601 media converter is specifically designed and focused to meet
indoor and outdoor deployment requirements. It provides a cost-effective
solution tailored to meet highly constrained, leading world telecoms system
specifications. The converter also offers a radical reduction in power
consumption, providing an optimized fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) solution for new
optical network terminals (ONTs).
"Marvell's latest addition to the AVANTA family once again raises the
technology bar by presenting an innovative approach for PON termination and
conversion to Ethernet in a pluggable SFP device," said Roman Kleinerman,
senior marketing and product line manager of Marvell Semiconductor, Inc. "More
specifically, by enabling the conversion of standard Ethernet equipment into
UPON-capable systems – without a field upgrade – Marvell offers significant
cost savings to operators around the world who are deploying FTTH networks.
The converter is also a classic example of the many ways in which Marvell
enables lightning-fast, round-the-clock connectivity to support the connected
The 88F6601 is comprised of an integrated ARM CPU, GPON and EPON MAC, a
programmable packet processor, GE Ethernet MAC, an 802.3az compliant
energy-efficient Ethernet GE PHY, 1588v2 support and two TDM channels for
POTS. In addition, the converter is designed for smooth content delivery and
offers a line rate performance with full IPv4 and IPv6 support.
At a glance, the 88F6601's features include:
