Take the Plunge to Help Stop Kids Cancer Cold

Bring in 2013 with the Sears Great Canadian Chill
TORONTO, Dec. 27, 2012 /CNW/ - Make a splash this New Year's day at the third
annual Sears Great Canadian Chill. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. brave Chillers will
plunge into the cold waters of the Ottawa River at Britannia Beach to help
raise money to find a cure for childhood cancer. Proceeds raised from the
event by the Sears Canada Charitable Foundation will be evenly allocated
between patient support at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO),
which includes programs and research in the hospital's Oncology Department,
and national pediatric oncology research initiatives, such as the Sears
Childhood Cancer Fellowship.
"It is so great to have our friends from Sears putting on events like the
Sears Great Canadian Chill. Their creative commitment to our children and
youth will truly make a difference in the fight against pediatric cancer, and
we thank them on behalf of the patients at CHEO," Said Fred Bartlett,
President and CEO of the CHEO Foundation.
The Chill is a Holiday tradition that encourages participants to dress up in
outrageous outfits and rush into the icy waters of the Ottawa River. This
event includes family fun activities such as live entertainment, prizes for
the top fundraisers and a contest for the zaniest costume.
"What an invigorating way to kick off the New Year," said Calvin McDonald,
President and CEO, Sears Canada Inc. "Seeing so many people raise much
needed funds and brave the cold waters to support the fight against childhood
cancer has made this inspiring event an annual favourite."
Participants can log on to www.TheChill.ca or call 1.888.93.CHILL to register
for the polar bear swim individually or as a team, with friends and family.
Each registered Chiller can create a participant profile on the website,
personalize a fundraising page and send donation requests to family and
friends. Spectators who just want to come down, chill out, not take the
plunge but cheer on others are very welcome and not required to register.
