Waste Management has celebrated the opening of its new CNG Clean N’ Green
Fueling Station in Pompano Beach, Fla.—the first CNG (compressed natural gas)
station in north Broward County to serve municipal and commercial fleets as
well as its own collection vehicles.

To meet company-wide sustainability goals as well as to reduce air pollution
in South Florida, the company recently added 75 new CNG-fueled trucks to its
Southern Sanitation fleet in Broward County replacing older, diesel-fueled
vehicles. The CNG trucks service Cooper City, Coral Springs, Dania Beach,
Davie, Lauderdale Lakes, Lighthouse Point, Margate, Parkland, Plantation,
Pompano Beach, Tamarac, Wilton Manor and unincorporated Broward County.

Waste Management’s investment in CNG infrastructure—including the new fueling
station and collection vehicles—totals nearly $30 million in Broward County.

“Since natural gas-powered collection trucks run cleaner and quieter, we’ve
made the commitment to use more in our local operations and support them and
our community by opening a CNG station to service municipal and corporate
fleets,” said WM Florida Area Vice President Tim Hawkins. “We are dedicated to
providing our customers with outstanding service while doing business in the
most sustainable manner possible.”

“Broward County applauds the investment Waste Management has made to make
clean, natural gas more available not only for its own vehicles, but for
municipal and commercial fleets throughout the county,” said Broward County
Commissioner Chip LaMarca who spoke at the ribbon cutting event. “We’re
pleased that the northern portion of the County, and my District, has a CNG
station available and conveniently located between I-95 and the Florida
Turnpike.”

As part of its sustainability goals, Waste Management already has more than
1,700 natural gas vehicles on the road—the largest CNG fleet in the North
American waste industry—including 125 in Florida. Natural gas vehicles
represent 80 percent of the company’s new truck purchases.

“Every truck we replace with natural gas reduces its diesel use by an average
of 8,000 gallons per year and cuts annual greenhouse gas emissions by 22
metric tons,” added Hawkins. “CNG-fueled trucks are also much quieter than
traditional diesel-powered trucks, a considerable benefit to the residential
neighborhoods we serve.”

CNG is one of the cleanest fuels currently available for use in heavy-duty
trucks. Its use reduces particulate matter emissions up to 86 percent, carbon
monoxide emissions by 80 percent, nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 32
percent, and carbon dioxide emissions by 25 percent.

Along with the CNG Clean N’ Green Fueling Station in Pompano Beach, the
company expects to have 45 CNG fueling stations in place by the end of 2012.
In Florida, the company has a CNG slow fill station in Sarasota with two
others planned for Palm Beach County and Tampa in 2013.

The self-service Clean N’ Green Fuel station is open 24/7 and accepts
PetroCard fleet cards. Fuel is currently priced at $2.199 GGE (gas gallon
equivalent).

The Pompano Beach CNG facility was built by ET Environmental and construction
was funded exclusively by Waste Management.
