3rd quarter earnings were lackluster for several industry players, as revenues and earnings fell in year-over-year comparisons or gained marginally. Shrinking operating margins worked against some companies, as higher expenses ate into earnings. The uneven economic recovery in the U.S. is also hurting the industry, as businesses continue to wait for a full scale recovery before committing to large-scale advertising campaigns. That being said, some companies have been seeing some improvements on the domestic front. Access reports on Monster Worldwide Inc. (NYSE: MWW) and Focus Media Holding Ltd. For companies with operations overseas, there have also been some hurdles. The Eurozone recovery continues to flounder, and the economies in China and Brazil could also be a concern moving forward. Currency fluctuations have also had a negative effect on select company earnings, and could continue to do so moving forward. With the Chinese economy showing some signs of weakness, it will be interesting to see how Focus Media which owns thousands of LCD displays in 90 cities will be faring.
