Hyundai / Kia sued for misrepresenting fuel efficiency
LONDON, ON, Nov. 5, 2012 /CNW/ - Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. and Kia Canada Inc. are being sued by Canadians upset at discovering their cars aren't as fuel efficient as they were told. The class-action lawsuits have been filed against both companies by law firm Siskinds LLP in Ontario, and similar lawsuits are being filed today in Quebec, British Columbia and other Canadian provinces.
The class actions allege that Canadians who bought a Hyundai or Kia automobile between 2010 and 2013 aren't getting the fuel efficiency numbers they were promised, and that they therefore overpaid for the vehicles, and continue to overpay every time they fill up with gas.
"Hyundai and Kia spent a lot of time and money selling Canadians a very compelling story, capitalizing on public concern over rising fuel costs and the protection of the environment. Unfortunately for Canadians, that was not the whole story," said Matthew Baer, a lawyer with Siskinds (LLP).
"We have filed class action lawsuits on behalf of these owners because Hyundai and Kia need to properly compensate Canadians who purchased these vehicles. They need to explain to Canadians what the real fuel mileage numbers are, and how long they've been aware of those real numbers. And then they need to provide proper compensation in line with what these buyers deserve. The compensation program that the companies have announced certainly helps, but does not provide a full and adequate remedy."
Canadians who purchased or leased one of the above vehicles are encouraged to visit www.classaction.ca or to call 1-800-461-6166 ext 2381 for English enquiries or 514-849-1970 for French enquiries.
The affected vehicles for Hyundai are the 2010 to 2013 Elantra, Sonata Hybrid, Accent, Genesis, Tucson, Veloster, Elantra Coupe, Elantra GT and Santa Fe. For Kia, the affected vehicles are the 2010 to 2013 Rio, Sportage, Soul, Soul ECO, and Optima HEV.
