Statement on Intent to Sign Industry-Wide Agreement
Des Moines, Ia. - DuPont Pioneer President Paul Schickler issued a statement
today indicating DuPont Pioneer's intent to sign an agricultural biotechnology
industry accord, the Generic Event Marketability and Access Agreement (GEMAA),
developed with the leadership of the American Seed Trade Association (ASTA) and
the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO).
"This agreement is an important first step, but the industry must continue
moving forward on the second half of the accord, which will ensure seed
companies are able to stack with generic traits to create innovative products
for farmers," said DuPont Pioneer President Paul Schickler. "We have the
opportunity as an industry to implement post-patent solutions similar to those
in the pharmaceutical and crop protection sectors that have ensured there is no
gap between when patents expire and new innovations reach the market.
Collaboration and cooperation is key in our industry to meeting the needs of
growers. With both agreements in place, we will maximize product choice for
growers and foster a competitive market making the best seed technology
available to farmers."
