Superconductivity Conference October 7th to 12th

AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 4, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Superconductor Technologies
Inc. (STI) (Nasdaq:SCON), a world leader in the development and production of
high temperature superconducting (HTS) materials and associated technologies,
is scheduled to present at the Applied Superconductivity Conference (ASC) held
at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland from October 7^th to 12^th. STI
will exhibit its Conductus^® superconducting wire in Exhibit Hall B at booth
55. Jeong Huh, Ph.D., will present in the session "Development of 2G HTS
Coated Conductors at STI" on Monday, October 8^th at 11:45 a.m. PT.

"STI will report on the advantages of our second generation (2G)
superconducting wire," said Adam Shelton, STI's VP of Product Line Management
and Marketing. "Our Conductus wire addresses the challenges of volume, cost
and performance required to enable the routine use of superconducting wire in
applications such as power cables and fault current limiters. We are excited
to participate in ASC 2012, an event marking the beginning of the second
century of superconductivity."

Dr. Huh will speak on the fabrication of 2G HTS coated conductors using
reactive co-evaporation with cyclic deposition and reaction (RCE-CDR) of HTS
films onto simplified templates. RCE-CDR is a low-cost, high-yield, scalable
process for deposition of HTS films with the advantage that the composition of
the films can be precisely varied and reproducibly controlled. At present STI
has fabricated samples on simplified IBAD templates that support >500
A/cm-width at 77 K, SF. At all angles of a 3-T applied magnetic field, STI has
achieved a minimum Ic value of >250 A/cm-width at 65 K. STI reached this
performance without the introduction of artificial pinning centers,
simplifying the design and improving yield. STI will also report on the
properties of longer lengths of tape.

ASC 2012 brings together leaders in the commercial, military, research,
university, and industrial communities from around the world to discuss
progress and challenges in the field of applied superconductivity. The event
features several plenary sessions focusing on what the industry might expect
to see in the next century of superconductivity in science and applications;
