Top Canadian Teachers to be Surprised by Grand & Toy with 'A Day Made Better' National Program Celebrates 17 Exceptional Teachers Who Demonstrate Creativity, Innovation and Excellence in the Classroom TORONTO, Oct. 4, 2011 /CNW/ - Canadian office solutions provider Grand & Toy (G&T), today will recognize 17 dedicated teachers from publicly-funded schools during its third annual 'A Day Made Better' campaign (www.grandandtoy.com/betterday). In classrooms across the country, the corporate social responsibility initiative rewards exceptional kindergarten to grade 8 teachers with a massive box containing $1,500 worth of classroom supplies including an environmentally preferable and ergonomic chair donated by Safco Products. "Celebrating teachers as local heroes for the dedication and creativity they bring to the classroom fits perfectly with our approach to support local communities," said Kevin Edwards, Vice President, Marketing, Grand & Toy. "Reviewing this year's record number of nominations, I was struck by the passionate stories told by principals, colleagues, parents and students. Each one clearly demonstrates a commitment to sustainability inside and outside the classroom and a brighter future for Canadian children." Now in its third year, the national 'A Day Made Better' sustainability program received 47 nominations from coast to coast. This year will also see the largest number of teachers celebrated with 17 of them being honoured and surprised in their schools. The recognized teachers come from communities across the country in the following cities: Belleville, Burnaby, Calgary, Edmonton, Fredericton, Halifax, Hamilton, Kitchener, Ladysmith, Moncton, Montreal, Orleans, St. Laurent, Thunder Bay, Toronto, Whitby and Winnipeg. The nominations highlighted stories of how teachers go above and beyond expectations to make a difference in the lives of their students. Some teachers will be recognized for their innovative use of technology such as creatively incorporating whiteboards and new media into their lesson plans. Others were selected for approaching each child as an individual to engage them on a personal level or taking leadership roles to enhance extra-curricular programming. Prize Each box which will be presented today contains $1,500 worth of creative classroom supplies that teachers can use to further enrich the classroom environment. The more than 80 items which include a boom box with mp3 playback capabilities, a digital camera and innovative arts and crafts materials are provided to help teachers focus on continuing their great work rather than worrying about how to secure educational supplies. The reward also includes a gift that the teacher can call their own, an ergonomic chair. "With no walls or door to their 'office', a teacher's chair should support them when they're not thinking on their feet," said Nathan Peterson, Division Manager, Safco Products Company. "We hope the comfort of an ergonomic and environmentally preferable chair will provide them with a daily reminder of our appreciation for their great work." Judging Process Nominations were accepted from March 1 to June 30, 2011. The Selection Committee included staff from Grand & Toy, Safco and Learning for a Sustainable Future. Entries were graded based on attributes including: the teacher's passion, commitment, innovation, inspiration and overall contribution to a sustainable social community inside the classroom and in the natural environment.
