Symmetricom and Grintek Telecom Improve Network Reliability for

MTN Group; Sync Upgrade To Enhance Performance for Leading African Cellular
Network
High-Tech Writers / Business Editors
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 3, 2004
Symmetricom (Nasdaq:SYMM), a leading worldwide supplier
of atomic clocks and network synchronization and timing solutions, and
Grintek Telecom today announced that Mobile Telephone Networks
(JSE:MTN)(MTN Group Ltd) will implement a synchronization upgrade to
its MSC, BSC and ATM network using Symmetricom's SSU 2000
Synchronization Supply Units and TimePictra network management
software.
The upgrade is to be rolled out in 21 locations throughout South
Africa. The value of the deal including extended warranty and support
is in excess of USD 1.3 million. Synchronization is required to
minimize service interruption and ensure all network elements perform
at peak efficiency. Quality sync is key for the smooth transmission of
voice, video and data.
"The African telecoms environment faces challenges such as
geographic expanses, population density, and disparity in
infrastructure. Our focus is to provide a high quality service for our
business and residential customers by increasing capacity where needed
and not just extending geographic coverage," said Karel Pienaar,
managing director, MTN SA. "Investing in our MSC, BSC and ATM sync
network infrastructure is a critical step towards providing excellence
in our operations."
"Grintek Telecom, Symmetricom's value added reseller for the
African market, is offering a turnkey solution including network
design, project management, implementation and support for the MTN
infrastructure upgrade," said Delio Senatore of Grintek.
"MTN has a demonstrated commitment to providing its customers with
Quality of Service improvements by deploying next-generation
synchronization supply units to reduce network and service failures,"
said Tom Steipp, president and CEO of Symmetricom. "Symmetricom's SSUs
and TimePictra management software will serve to minimize network
downtime in MTN's MSC and BSC networks."
