Overseas markets are experiencing a slight amount of selling pressure as
just five of the 15 markets that we track are currently positive. The
cumulative average return on the group stands at a minus 0.183 percent. The
Nikkei had an early opportunity to react to the triad of earnings out of the
technology sector of last evening and finished lower by 1.82 percent at the
low of the session. The actively trading bourses, however, have moved off of
their session lows. Tokyo Department Store Sales declined for a 25th
consecutive month, this time by 4.7 percent on the year. Concerns over the
strength of the jobs market appears to continue to hang over the Japanese
consumer as unemployment remains at a historically high 5.2 percent.
Department Store Sales is considered a directional indicator for the broader
based nationwide sales figures, scheduled for release later this month.
Before the market open today, the December Consumer Price Index is
expected to have risen by 0.2 percent, reversing last month's 0.2 percent
decline. The Core Index (less food and energy) is seen at plus 0.1 percent,
reversing the November 0.1 percent decline. Also at 8:30 a.m., December
Retail and Food Sales are seen rising at a 0.8 percent pace, slightly off of
November's 0.9 percent rise. Pulling auto sales out of the equation and sales
are expected to show a 0.4 percent rise, matching the previous month's 0.4
percent advance. You will want to pay attention to a little mentioned aspect
of the monthly sales figures, sales without gasoline and auto sales. This
figure offers a more accurate portrayal of discretionary consumer spending.
In November, this figure rose by 0.3 percent (lower than the headline 0.9
percent rise). Initial Jobless Claims for the week ending January 10 will
also be released before the market open and are seen lower by 3,000 versus the
surprise rise of 14,000 booked in the prior week. Two regional manufacturing
reports are due out today. The January Empire State Manufacturing Survey,
seen at 35.0, last 37.37, will be released before the market open and the
January Philadelphia Fed Business Index (seen at 30.0, last 32.1) will be
reported at noon. These reports will most likely be ignored by the market as
they contain nothing more than the national reports they are competing with
today. International Business Machines will report its fourth quarter
earnings today at 7:30 a.m. instead of next Tuesday. Reasoning for the early
release partly was due to the timing of the New Year and Martin Luther King
Jr. holidays.

Financial investment expert and former options trader at the CBOE, Bryan
Bottarelli, has an urgent alert for investors: "Seven million Americans became
victims of identity theft in 2003, at an average cost of $90,000 per case.
That's $4.4 billion. If you watched the news Monday night, you'll know about
the identity theft crisis in America. A very convincing email scam --
originating in Russia -- has been distributed. The hoax hit British banks
during October and November and has now reached America. Disguised to look
like Citibank, the e-mail tells you to verify your e-mail address. Clicking
the link takes you to a genuine Citibank webpage, making you think you're
dealing with them. But it fools you by bringing up a fake pop-up window, where
you're asked to enter your account information ... which goes directly to the
thieves. Fortunately, I've unearthed a small company whose product could stop
the crooks and put an end to identity theft forever. In fact, the technology
is so powerful, Microsoft has decided to use it in their new Windows systems.
That deal alone could send shares of this company higher."
