VIA Technologies Selects Credence's Octet as a Preferred Chipset

                                Test Platform

  FREMONT, Calif., April 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Credence Systems Corporation (Nasdaq: CMOS), a leading provider of solutions
from design-to-production test for the worldwide semiconductor industry, today
announced that VIA Technologies Inc. has selected its Octet(TM) configurable
system-on-chip (SoC) platform for production test of its high volume computer
chipsets. Octet's demonstrated performance and superior test times provide VIA
with a compelling production test solution at a lower overall cost-of-test
than competitive systems.
Octet features a wide selection of instruments capable of testing complex
SoCs that incorporate a number of different intellectual property (IP) cores.
The platform's architecture enables digital, high-speed serial, and analog
tests to run simultaneously, significantly improving throughput. Additionally,
Octet's powerful software suite saves VIA time during test development and
facilitates a quick ramp-up to high-volume production test at their targeted
manufacturing subcontractors.
"As one of the leading suppliers of computer chipsets, we are continually
looking for ways to increase our IC production while lowering manufacturing
costs," said Shelton Lu, vice president of manufacturing and product
engineering at VIA Technologies. "By working with Credence, we have access to
an advanced SoC test platform that easily meets our performance requirements.
Additionally, Credence's on-site engineering support enabled us to efficiently
transfer volume manufacturing of these chipsets to Octet, and we are already
experiencing extremely competitive test times."
"VIA computer chipsets are being incorporated on many of today's
motherboards and current production is reaching several hundred thousand units
per week," said Gary Smith, senior vice president of Credence's SoC Products
Group. "Octet's advanced software tools allow VIA to develop test programs
that can be rapidly transferred to production test. The ability to
manufacture ICs quickly will help VIA meet the increasing demand for PC
chipsets, strengthening their position in the marketplace."
Octet addresses demanding SoC test conditions that require high data rates
and signal speeds. With leading-edge jitter analysis tools and configurable
modular instrumentation, Octet is ideally suited to test high frequency,
multi-channel, multi-site and precision audio applications. The platform gives
VIA unique performance and economic advantages as they continue to develop
innovative silicon chip technologies and PC platform solutions.
