Telstra Corporation Deploys Tellabs Voice-Quality Enhancement

                         Equipment
                       To Improve Customer Call Quality

NAPERVILLE, Ill., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Telstra Corporation,
Australia's largest mobile phone carrier, has deployed Tellabs (Nasdaq: TLAB)
voice-quality enhancement (VQE) equipment to reduce background noise from its
customers' phone conversations by up to 65 percent and improve overall call
quality. Tellabs Noise Reduction reduces the background noise that is heard
when Telstra's customers are using their mobile phones in noisy environments,
while Tellabs Level Control optimizes speech levels to help improve overall
call quality.
Telstra implemented the Tellabs VQE upgrade on its GSM (global system for
mobile communications) network in June 2002. Prior to the implementation,
COHPAC Communications Systems, a Tellabs sales partner, worked in
collaboration with Telstra Research Laboratories (TRL) for four months to
conduct extensive objective and subjective tests in Melbourne, Australia.
Following these tests, the VQE parameter settings were optimized for Telstra's
network and, as a result, the network level variations were minimized and
background noise was reduced by up to 65 percent. Measurements conducted in
the network after the VQE upgrade was implemented also showed a significant
improvement in the Mean Opinion Score (MOS), which is a numerical measure that
service providers use to measure the quality of human speech in mobile calls.
"We are continually improving the voice quality of our mobile services so
our customers can hear and be heard more clearly when using their mobile
phones," said Rick Wakeham, managing director of products for Telstra Mobile.
"With the adoption of Tellabs voice-quality enhancement technology, Telstra
has reinforced its position as Australia's leading provider of GSM mobile
services."
In addition to the Tellabs Noise Reduction and Tellabs Level Control
equipment, Telstra also operates the Tellabs(R) 3100 voice-quality enhancement
system to eliminate echo while also improving network and operating
efficiencies.
"Tellabs voice-quality enhancement solutions help our customers improve
overall call quality on their wireless and long-distance networks," said John
Cole, vice president and general manager for Tellabs' Asia-Pacific region. "By
using Tellabs voice-quality enhancement solutions to improve call quality,
Telstra will enhance its competitive advantage in Australia."
Telstra is a 10-year customer of Tellabs. During this time, Telstra has
been helping Tellabs evaluate and improve its proprietary voice-quality
enhancement solutions as new technology is developed.
Tellabs voice-quality enhancement solutions eliminate echo, improve voice
quality and deliver quality performance in mobile and long-distance networks.
