Equipment To Improve Customer Call Quality NAPERVILLE, Ill., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Telstra Corporation, Australia's largest mobile phone carrier, has deployed Tellabs (Nasdaq: TLAB) voice-quality enhancement (VQE) equipment to reduce background noise from its customers' phone conversations by up to 65 percent and improve overall call quality. Tellabs Noise Reduction reduces the background noise that is heard when Telstra's customers are using their mobile phones in noisy environments, while Tellabs Level Control optimizes speech levels to help improve overall call quality. Telstra implemented the Tellabs VQE upgrade on its GSM (global system for mobile communications) network in June 2002. Prior to the implementation, COHPAC Communications Systems, a Tellabs sales partner, worked in collaboration with Telstra Research Laboratories (TRL) for four months to conduct extensive objective and subjective tests in Melbourne, Australia. Following these tests, the VQE parameter settings were optimized for Telstra's network and, as a result, the network level variations were minimized and background noise was reduced by up to 65 percent. Measurements conducted in the network after the VQE upgrade was implemented also showed a significant improvement in the Mean Opinion Score (MOS), which is a numerical measure that service providers use to measure the quality of human speech in mobile calls.
