Communications for ADSL Equipment
Application to Provide ADSL Service to Alaska's Remote Subscribers
PETALUMA, Calif., Nov. 28 /PRNewswire/ --
Advanced Fibre Communications(R), Inc. (AFC(R)) (Nasdaq: AFCI), a leader in
multi-service broadband solutions for the telecommunications industry, today
announced that it has signed a multi-year agreement with
Alaska Communications Systems Group, Inc. (ACS) (Nasdaq: ALSK) to supply
remote broadband ADSL access equipment. Valued at approximately $10 million,
the three-year deal will provide ADSL and additional voice services to
subscribers who reside in some of the most remote parts of Alaska.
Headquartered in Anchorage, ACS is Alaska's largest, full-service, statewide
Under the terms of the agreement, AFC has been field approved and endorsed
by ACS to supply AFC's EMAXplus(TM) multi-service access platform, Panorama
Element Management System(TM), as well as indoor and environmentally hardened
outside plant cabinets. AFC's remote access solutions will allow Alaska-based
service providers to quickly and cost-effectively deploy a full suite of
narrowband, wideband and broadband services, meeting the growing demand for
additional voice and data services.
"AFC is pleased to have been selected to provide ACS with next-generation
solutions that meet both the growing need for broadband among rural ACS
subscribers and the demanding environmental conditions of Alaska," said
Kevin McClain, regional vice president for AFC. "Alaskans living in extremely
remote areas will now enjoy the same type of high-speed Internet service that
is being deployed in heavily populated urban centers."
In order to upgrade existing digital loop carriers (DLC's) throughout its
network, ACS will deploy AFC's EMAXplus, a cost-effective retrofit solution
for remote cabinets. AFC's EMAXplus system fits into existing legacy cabinets,
eliminating time consuming and costly upgrades, and will instantly provide
broadband ADSL and additional voice services. The EMAXplus retrofit kit
incorporates AFC's DMAX1120(TM) system, a multi-service access platform
channel bank assembly that is uniquely suited to provide high-density
broadband ATM over DSL and traditional analogue and digital narrowband
"Although some of our existing cabinets are still environmentally sound,
some of them have reached capacity or can't be upgraded to provide broadband
services like ADSL," said Mike Bowman, vice president of engineering for ACS.
"The EMAXplus solution makes sense for us. In literally a few days, we can
upgrade old cabinets to provide not only more voice services, but ADSL as
well, without all of the engineering costs associated with cabinet
ACS has also selected AFC's indoor and outdoor housings where new DLC
cabinets are needed in new or expanding areas. ACS has found AFC's
environmentally hardened cabinets to be robust and able to endure the harsh
weather conditions and extreme variance in temperatures experienced in many
parts of Alaska.
Panorama is AFC's graphical element management system and is designed to
make the job of provisioning and maintaining AFC equipment simple and
straightforward. Through a graphical user interface, Panorama is capable of
providing fault management, configuration, and provisioning capabilities into
one centralized Network Operations Center.
ACS is the leading diversified, facilities-based telecommunications
carrier in Alaska, offering local telephone service, wireless, long distance,
data and Internet services to business and residential customers throughout
Alaska. ACS currently serves approximately 330,000 access lines and
74,000 cellular customers throughout the state.
