SEATTLE, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- China Airlines, Taiwan's leading carrier,
announced an order for 13 747-400 freighters today, The Boeing Company
(NYSE: BA) confirmed. China Airlines now has placed more orders for the
747-400 Freighter than any other airline.
Deliveries for the order, valued at approximately $2.5 billion, are
scheduled to begin in July 2000 and continue through 2007.
"Boeing products and services have long been the foundation of our fleet,"
said China Airlines President Sandy Liu.
"And with worldwide cargo growth forecast to increase 6.4 percent annually
combined with Asian markets gaining strength, we believe these airplanes will
help us successfully grow our business interests now and in the future. The
747-400 Freighter has commonality with our 747-400 Passenger fleet and offers
us much more capability than our existing 747-200s," Liu said.
"China Airlines has been an important customer for many years," said Alan
Mulally, president, Boeing Commercial Airplanes Group. "Asia is rebounding
from the effects of the financial crisis, and this order from China Airlines
is a signal of the recovery in Asian markets.
"Boeing will work very hard in the future to satisfy China Airlines, and I
welcome the opportunity to work more closely with Sandy Liu, one of the
leading airline executives in Asia," Mulally said.
China Airlines serves more than 35 cities throughout Asia, Europe, North
America and the Pacific, and is expanding its network with increased scheduled
and charter flights to meet growing demand.
The new-technology Boeing 747-400 Freighter is an all-cargo transport
member of the 747-400 family. It can carry more cargo farther than any other
commercial jet freighter, with the lowest operating cost per ton-mile. All of
the advances introduced in the 747-400 passenger version are available in the
all-cargo configuration.
