LOS ANGELES, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Delphi Energy & Engine Management
Systems, in cooperation with Aerovironment, Inc., has demonstrated that lead
acid battery technology is a viable solution for the electric vehicle
marketplace. During a 24-hour period on December 8-9, a Saturn EV conversion
equipped with 24 Delco 12 volt valve regulated lead acid batteries set a
record of 1,020 miles driven in a 24-hour period. This surpasses a previous
record of 832 miles set in 1994.

be a leader in the development and commercialization of advanced battery
technology and this 24-hour test reinforces our commitment," said
Delphi's batteries, rated at 54 amp hours (3 hour rate), were arranged in
two parallel strings of 12 batteries each. These Delco batteries are
compliant to SAE J1797 recommended practice for EV packaging. In addition,
the battery modules were equipped with Delphi's Smart Guard battery data
acquisition system (patent pending) which measures and enables data transfer
of battery voltage and temperature for closed loop feedback.
The fast charge method, provided by Aerovironment, Inc., allowed the
vehicle to be driven for a total of 23 loops at an average of 43 miles per
loop on the highways and streets of Los Angeles. The Pro Charge technology
along with an ideal charge profile for the vehicle permitted the optimum
amount of current to be delivered from the fast charge system to the battery
modules. The average recharge time for each charge was 11 minutes, for a
total of 22 en-route recharges.
