IN DOUAI, FRANCE
LOCKPORT, N.Y., May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Delphi Harrison Thermal
Systems and Calsonic Corporation will add a second air conditioning
compressor facility in Douai, France to manufacture components that will
create a more comprehensive compressor product line for European
automotive manufacturers, company officials announced today.
In April 1995, Delphi Thermal and Calsonic Corp. entered into a
joint venture for a 10,000-square-meter manufacturing facility on six
hectares in Douai.
Today's announcement adds a production facility through another
joint venture with Calsonic to manufacture compact variable compressors
(CVCs) at this same site. The addition will be a 10,800-square-meter
facility, scheduled for completion by December. CVC production is
scheduled to begin by summer 1997.
"Constructing a second manufacturing site in Douai will help Delphi
Thermal gain new business due to the advantage its location affords,"
said Delphi Thermal General Manager Michael J. Burns. "It also allows
us to coordinate activities with our existing joint venture in Douai."
Delphi Thermal plans to supply the latest air-conditioning
technologies to European automotive companies -- automotive air
conditioning systems require various-sized compressors based on the
specific vehicle application.
"Different vehicles require different air-conditioning systems to
provide the maximum levels of comfort for passengers," Burns said.
"Manufacturing the CVC in Douai complements Delphi Thermal's other
compressor offerings, bringing complete product line coverage to our
customers and potential customers in Europe."
Depending on European automobile market demand for air conditioning,
current employment expectations at the CVC facility exceed 200 people.
Calsonic is planning to supply the CVC initially to Nissan Motors, with
additional plans to market to other original equipment manufacturers,
including Japanese automakers.
