Dom Perignon Signed by England 1966 World Champions to Be Sold

By Ryan Mills

April 11 (Bloomberg) -- A 1966 bottle of Dom Perignon champagne, signed by the 10 surviving members of England's World Cup-winning soccer team of the same year, is to be auctioned by Sotheby's in London.

Sotheby's expects the sparkling wine to fetch between 5,000 and 8,000 pounds ($8,700 and $13,900) for Cancer Research U.K.'s Bobby Moore fund, which was set up after the captain of the team died of bowel cancer in 1993. The sale is on May 10.

``This is an extremely exciting moment, both for lovers of wine and for lovers of football,'' Serena Sutcliffe, head of Sotheby's international wine department, said in an e-mailed statement.

David Beckham will this year in Germany try to become the second England captain to lead his side to victory in the four- yearly showpiece. The 1966 team remains the only England side to win any major tournament.

``This is a very special year for the charity, as it marks the 40th anniversary of when Bobby captained the England team to World Cup victory,'' said Moore's widow, Stephanie. ``I'm delighted that the money raised from this unique sale will fund vital research into bowel cancer.''

England faces Paraguay in its opening match on June 10 before further group games against Trinidad & Tobago and Sweden.
