April 7 (Bloomberg) -- Newcastle beat Sporting Lisbon 1-0 in the quarterfinals of European soccer's UEFA Cup, while two- time champion Parma drew 1-1 at Austria Vienna.
Newcastle striker Alan Shearer, who last week signed a new one-year contract after reversing his decision to retire, scored the only goal at St. James' Park. He has scored in every game in which he has played in the competition this season.
``We've not played well tonight but we got the win and a clean sheet, which is important,'' Newcastle manager Graeme Souness told ITV.
Elsewhere, in the opening games of the two-match series, Dutch club AZ Alkmaar won 2-1 at Spain's Villarreal and CSKA Moscow beat Auxerre 4-0. The second matches are all scheduled for April 14.
Sporting had the first shot on target tonight as 32-goal top-scorer Liedson tested goalkeeper Shay Given with a long- range effort after 17 minutes. Given pushed the ball behind for a corner.
Newcastle winger Laurent Robert then hit the post direct from a corner kick after 30 minutes. Four minutes later his freekick was headed in by Shearer, though referee Yuri Baskakov disallowed the goal and asked for the kick to be taken again.
After 37 minutes Robert and Shearer combined again to give Newcastle the lead. Shearer headed his 11th European goal of the season past goalkeeper Ricardo from 12 yards.
Former England captain Shearer, who is aiming to help Newcastle win a first trophy since 1969, is now only eight goals short of Jackie Milburn's Newcastle record of 200 in all competitions.
Chances
Newcastle had chances to increase its advantage in the final 10 minutes as substitute James Milner fired a shot over the bar after collecting a long pass from Steven Taylor, while Shola Ameobi hit an effort wide.
The English team suffered two injuries in the match. Given was replaced by Steve Harper at halftime and Kieron Dyer by Lee Bowyer after 64 minutes. Dyer and Bowyer had been sent from the field of play on Saturday after trading punches during a 3-0 defeat at Aston Villa.
Sporting, which will host the May 18 final at its Estadio Alvalade ground, will be without Liedson for next week's match. He is suspended after receiving his third yellow card in the competition.
``It will be tough over there but we fancy our chances,'' Shearer told ITV. ``We want to go all the way and win the competition.''
Recovered
Parma, the only former winner remaining in the UEFA Cup, took a halftime lead at Austria Vienna as Andrea Pisanu scored after 34 minutes. Sebastian Mila tied the match for the home team in the 62nd minute.
Alkmaar recovered from only its second domestic league defeat on Sunday to inflict Villarreal's first home loss in the UEFA Cup this campaign.
Denny Landzaat gave the visitor a 12th-minute lead, though Villarreal, a semifinalist last season, was level with two minutes as Juan Riquelme scored. Robin Nelisse got the winning goal for Co Adriaanse's team after 74 minutes.
Chidi Odiah, Sergei Ignashevich, Silva Vagner Love and Rolan Gusev scored goals for CSKA Moscow against Auxerre, which finished the match with 10 men after Jean-Pascal Mignot received a second yellow card.
