Sept. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Russia will equip all its military districts with Iskander missile systems, Interfax reported, citing General Vladimir Boldyrev, head of Russian land forces, who spoke to reporters during military exercises today.
President Dmitry Medvedev said last week Russia will drop plans to place Iskanders in Kaliningrad, a Russian enclave on the Polish border, after the U.S. scrapped plans to deploy elements of a missile defense shield in Poland and the Czech Republic.
The two statements don’t contradict each other, independent defense analyst Alexander Golts said by telephone. The military has been planning to replace its SS-21 Tochka missile systems with the more modern SS-26 Iskander, he said.
