NYSE Says Error Delayed Delivery of Price Quote Data (Update3)
Jan. 28 (Bloomberg) -- NYSE Euronext said a technical error at the New York Stock Exchange, the world’s largest equity market, caused delays in current prices being delivered to customers. NYSE said at 12:12 p.m. that quotes in the affected companies were restored and all market data is up to date.
The problem affected the so-called consolidated quote system, which aggregates the best price at various trading venues for NYSE Euronext-listed companies, the New York-based company said. The CQS sells the data from the exchange to vendors including Bloomberg LP, the parent of Bloomberg News, who provide that information to customers.
NYSE said the so-called national best bid and offer wasn’t including prices from the New York Stock Exchange and NYSE Amex for companies with stock symbols between “A” and “HZZ.” Quotes from all other markets including Nasdaq OMX Group Inc. and Bat Global Markets were still included in the NBBO.
“It could confuse some algorithms and potentially screw up best execution on retail trading desks that typically automatically execute smaller trades,” said Robert Shelton, an equity trader at Jesup & Lamont Inc. in Longwood, Florida. “Traders can work around it, but when you take the human factor out,” the computers can make mistakes, he added.
