July 29 (Bloomberg) -- Cameron Diaz, the star of films including ``Charlie's Angels'' and ``There's Something About Mary,'' won an apology from Britain's Sun newspaper over an article that claimed she was romancing a married man.
News Group Newspapers Ltd., a unit of News Corp. and the Sun's owner, accepts that the allegations in the May 2005 article weren't true and has agreed to publish a ``prominent'' apology and to pay the actress's legal costs, Simon Smith, Diaz's lawyer, said in a statement today at the High Court in London. Diaz, 32, had started libel proceedings against the publisher over the article.
News Group acknowledged in the statement that the article had caused damage to Diaz's personal and professional reputation, as well as ``distress'' to her boyfriend, singer Justin Timberlake. It said that the story was based on a previous report in the U.S.- based National Enquirer magazine, published by American Media Inc.
