Oct. 9 (Bloomberg) -- California Governor-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger named 65 people, including the Democratic mayors of the state's two biggest cities, to a transition team that will recruit appointees and help shape policy before he takes office next month.
Schwarzenegger, after winning office in Tuesday's recall election, has pledged to reach out to Democrats, who control both houses of the state legislature. The effort comes after a hard- fought campaign in which Democrats called for a criminal investigation into alleged mistreatment of women by the actor.
``You will see people that are to the left, people that are to the right, and people that are to center,'' he said during a televised news conference.
Los Angeles Mayor James K. Hahn and San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, both Democrats who supported Governor Gray Davis, were named to the transition team. Also named was investment banker Bill Simon Jr., who lost to Davis in last November's general election and dropped out of the recall race last month.
Schwarzenegger, an actor who starred in the Terminator film series, beat his closest rival by 17 percentage points Tuesday in the state's first-ever gubernatorial recall election to replace Davis.
Schwarzenegger, 56, will take office after the election is certified, which must be done by Nov. 15. The secretary of state may certify the election earlier. Schwarzenegger will serve the three years left in Davis's term.
The governor-elect has said that his victory is a mandate for change in state government and that he needed the help of Democrats.
``In my campaign, I said that I would reach across the political aisle and bring the best and brightest people together to help us solve the problems facing California,'' Schwarzenegger said.
Other Members
Schwarzenegger also named Donna Arduin, who is on leave as Florida's budget director under Governor Jeb Bush, to serve as director of an independent audit to identify potential areas for savings and other efficiency. Arduin also has held budget posts in New York and Michigan. Republican Congressman David Dreier was named yesterday as chairman of the transition team. Dreier, the 51-year-old chairman of the House Rules Committee, has served in the House of Representatives since 1980.
The staff director of the transition team will be Jim Richardson, a former teacher and now chief of staff for California Senate Minority leader Jim Brulte. Brulte, also a committee member, led the successful Republican opposition to a tax increase during last summer's negotiations over a record $38 billion budget deficit.
Fiorina, Fong
The transition team includes Carly Fiorina, chief executive of Hewlett-Packard Co, the most powerful woman in business for six straight years, according to Fortune magazine. Hewlett- Packard, based in Palo Alto, California, is the world's second- biggest computer maker.
Former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz will help with the transition, as well as Gerald Parsky, chairman of Aurora Capital Partners in Los Angeles and U.S. President George W. Bush's fund-raiser in California.
Also on the list is former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, who lost to Simon in last year's gubernatorial Republican primary. Riordan, a Republican, had considered seeking Davis's post if Schwarzenegger hadn't entered the race.
Matt Fong, former Republican California treasurer from 1995 to 1999, will serve on the transition team. Fong is president of Strategic Advisory Group, a consulting firm for investment and technology-related companies.
