Supertyphoon Nabi Heads for Southern Japan, Korean Peninsula

Sept. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Supertyphoon Nabi, with sustained winds of 140 kph (87 mph), is heading for Japan's southern island of Kyushu and the Korean peninsula and may start to affect coastal areas in Japan from Sept 4, the U.S. typhoon warning center said.

The center of Nabi, with winds gusting up to 170 kph, is the 14th tropical storm of the Pacific typhoon season. It's located about 402 kilometers (250 miles) southeast of the southern Japanese island of Okinawa is expected to generate waves as high as 51 feet, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center said on its Web site.

Japan's Meteorological Agency said it on its Web site it expects extremely strong winds from Nabi. It is moving northwest at about 10 kph, the warning center said.

Typhoon Talim, with winds gusting to as high as 137 kilometers per hour, made landfall in China yesterday after leaving two people dead and 39 injured in Taiwan.
