Taiwan Prosecutors Say Presidential Shooting Probe Continues

By Yu-huay Sun and George Hsu

March 7 (Bloomberg) -- Taiwan prosecutors said the investigation into last year's gunshot wounding of President Chen Shui-bian is continuing, casting doubts on television reports that the case has been solved.

``What the television reported is not what we're going to say,'' Tainan Chief Prosecutor Liu Wei-tsung told a press briefing in Taipei today.

Taiwan police found two people were involved in the election-eve shooting of the president and vice president and both suspects may have committed suicide, Agence France-Presse reported, citing TVBS and other local media.

Chen, 53, and Vice President Annette Lu suffered flesh wounds when shots were fired at their campaign motorcade in the southern city of Tainan on the eve of the March 20 presidential election. They went on to win the election by 30,000 of 13 million votes, triggering accusations from the opposition Nationalist Party that the shooting was staged to elicit sympathy votes.

The election dispute spawned weeks of street protests and an unsuccessful attempt by the Nationalists to void the election result in court.
