Emirates Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Perth; No Injuries

Oct. 16 (Bloomberg) -- An Emirates Airline plane was forced to make an emergency landing at Perth International Airport today in Western Australia's second scare involving a major aviation company this month.

The pilot of flight EK425 reported problems about two hours after taking off from Perth for Dubai, Malcolm Bradshaw, general manager of corporate affairs at Perth International Airport, said in a phone interview today. The Airbus A340 landed safely at Perth and no injuries among the 120 passengers and crew were reported, he said.

Bradshaw declined to comment on the potential cause of the problems and on media reports that smoke was seen coming from the cabin. Emirates will be making a statement regarding the incident later today, Bradshaw said.

The incident follows a mid-flight plunge by another Airbus off the Western Australian coast on Oct. 7. A Qantas Airways Ltd.-owned Airbus A330-300 nose-dived after a computer fault switched off the autopilot and generated false data, according to Australian Transport Safety Bureau.

More than 40 passengers and crew needed hospital treatment for spinal injuries, cuts, broken bones and concussion after flight QF72 from Singapore to Perth suddenly lost altitude.
