Square Enix Shares Gain on `Final Fantasy' Release (Update1)

By Hiroshi Suzuki

July 15 (Bloomberg) -- Square Enix Co., creator of the ``Final Fantasy'' series of role-playing games, rose the most in more than a month after Microsoft Corp. said the developer will offer a new installment of the video game that's compatible with the Xbox 360 console.

Square Enix gained 5.2 percent to close at 3,250 yen on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the biggest advance since May 22. The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average fell 2 percent.

``Final Fantasy XIII'' will be available on the Xbox 360 in the U.S. and Europe, Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft said in a statement yesterday. The game will be offered in Japan for Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 console and not the Xbox 360, Misa Tokunaga, a spokeswoman at Tokyo-based Square Enix, said by phone today.

``Square Enix is adopting a flexible strategy for releasing game software,'' said Takeshi Koyama, an analyst at Mizuho Securities Co. in Tokyo with a ``buy'' rating on the company. ``The share price movement today reflects that investors welcome the news.''

Sales of the previous installment, which runs on Sony's and Microsoft's game consoles, reached 5.6 million copies, Square Enix said.
