Typhoon Mirinae Kills 123 in Vietnam, Destroys Homes (Update1)

By Van Nguyen

Nov. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Vietnam said at least 123 people were killed when Typhoon Mirinae hit the central and southern coasts last week, ravaging crops and destroying nearly 2,400 homes.

The storm plowed into Vietnam’s south-central coast on Nov. 2, causing more than 5 trillion dong ($280 million) in damage, the National Committee for Flood and Storm Control said today. At least one person is still missing and 145 are injured, the statement said.

Typhoons and flash floods have taken at least 299 lives in Vietnam this year, according to reports posted on the committee’s Web site. Natural calamities killed at least 474 people in the country in 2008 and 464 the previous year, the committee said.

Mirinae’s rains submerged 19,300 hectares (47,700 acres) of rice, 47,000 hectares of vegetables, corn and sugar cane, and more than 371,000 hectares of industrial crops, such as rubber, the committee said in the statement.

Typhoons Mirinae and Ketsana, which hit central Vietnam in September, were the deadliest storms this year. Ketsana killed at least 172 people and caused 14.3 trillion dong in damage, according to another report on the committee’s Web site.
