Lord’s Resistance Army Kills 189 in Congo Attack, UN Group Says

Dec. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Rebels from the Lord’s Resistance Army killed at least 189 people in a three-day campaign in northeastern Congo, the United Nations Office for the Co- ordination of Humanitarian Affairs said.

The Ugandan rebels killed 89 around Doruma, a town near the intersection of the borders of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Southern Sudan and the Central African Republic; 40 in the Faradje district and 60 in and near the village of Gurba, OCHA said in an e-mailed statement.

Some 20 children and an unknown number of adults were abducted from Faradje, the UN said, citing local officials. More than 120 houses were also burned during the December 25 to 27 campaign by the LRA, whose leader Joseph Kony is wanted on war crimes accusations.

Ugandan security forces killed 13 members of the LRA and seized weapons and ammunition in an ambush in Congo’s northeast, New Vision reported, citing Captain Chris Magezi, a military spokesman.

The fighters were killed at Doruma, the Kampala-based newspaper said on its Web site yesterday. The Uganda People’s Defense Forces, along with Congo and Southern Sudan’s armies, began an offensive against the LRA on Dec. 14.

At least 45 bodies were found in a Catholic church 10 kilometers (6 miles) southeast of Doruma after a massacre on Dec. 26, the newspaper said. The LRA rebels used machetes, swords and clubs to kill people, including women and children, who had taken refuge in the church, the newspaper said.
