Absa, Coronation, Vodacom, Mazor: South African Equity Preview

Nov. 10 (Bloomberg) -- The following is a list of companies whose shares may have unusual price changes in South Africa. Stock symbols are in parentheses after company names and prices are from the last close.

South Africa’s FTSE/JSE Africa All Share Index added 411.56, or 1.6 percent, to 26,345.01.

Absa Group Ltd. (ASA SJ): South Africa’s biggest retail bank was raised to “hold” from “sell” at Deutsche Bank AG. Absa rallied 2.49 rand, or 2.1 percent, to 122.50 rand.

BHP Billiton Ltd. (BIL SJ): The company’s workers plan to stage a protest outside its office in Santiago over wages and bonuses, a labor-union official said. BHP gained 6.79 rand, or 3.2 percent, to 219.61 rand.

Coronation Fund Managers Ltd. (CML SJ): The Cape Town-based money manager said full-year profit rose 19 percent to 210.9 million rand ($28.3 million). Coronation’s stock was unchanged at 8 rand.

Lonrho Plc. (LAF SJ): The U.K. company that invests in Africa said trading conditions “remain challenging.” The shares were unchanged at 96 cents.

Mazor Group Ltd. (MZR SJ): The supplier of steel and aluminum doors and windows said first-half net income rose to 32.2 million rand, from 25.4 million a year earlier. Mazor slid 2 cents, or 0.7 percent, to 2.78 rand.

Medi-Clinic Corp Ltd. (MDC SJ): South Africa’s second- largest publicly traded private hospital owner releases first- half earnings. The shares rose 13 cents, or 0.6 percent, to 22.75 rand.

Set Point Technology Holdings Ltd. (STO SJ): The technology company said it is in talks that may affect its share price. Set Point was unchanged at 83 cents.

Trans Hex Group Ltd. (TSX SJ): Africa’s largest publicly traded producer of diamonds posted a first-half profit from continuing operations of 10.2 million rand, compared with a loss of 56 million rand a year earlier. Trans Hex was unchanged at 4 rand.

Vodacom Group Ltd. (VOD SJ): The largest provider of mobile-phone services to South Africans was raised to “buy” from “neutral” at UBS AG, which said clarity on new mobile termination rates and increased consumer spending could be catalysts for the shares. Vodacom slipped 36 cents, or 0.7 percent, to 52.02 rand.

Woolworths Holdings Ltd. (WHL SJ): The South African food and clothing retailer hosts its annual general meeting. Woolworth rose 10 cents, or 0.6 percent, to 16.50 rand.

Shares or American depositary receipts of the following South African companies closed as follows:

Anglo American Plc (AAUKY US) rose 5.7 percent to $20.85. AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. (AU US) gained 2.2 percent to $42.40. BHP Billiton Ltd. (BBL US) added 5 percent to $59.75. DRDGold Ltd. (DROOY US) slumped 12 percent to $5.54. Gold Fields Ltd. (GFI US) increased 4 percent to $14.56. Harmony Gold Mining Co. (HMY US) advanced 2 percent to $10.90. Impala Platinum Holdings Co. (IMPUY US) added 4.9 percent to $23.49. Sappi Ltd. (SPP US) climbed 3.2 percent to $3.16. Sasol Ltd. (SSL US) gained 2.8 percent to $40.15. Telkom South Africa Ltd. (TLKGY US) rose 3.5 percent to $22.50.
