Nov. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Two of the 37,899 New York City Marathon finishers died yesterday after completing the race, the New York Times reported.
The New York Road Runners, which organizes the annual event, did not release any details on one of the deaths, besides the fact that he died on site after reaching the finish line, the Times said. Telephone messages left for Road Runners spokeswoman Sara Hunninghake as well as the New York City Medical Examiner's Office weren't immediately returned.
The other runner who died was 58-year-old Carlos Jose Gomes of Sao Paulo, Brazil, who said he felt ill shortly after completing the 26.2-mile (42.2-kilometer) race and was taken by ambulance to a Manhattan hospital, according to the Associated Press, which cited police.
One of the deaths was as the result of cardiac arrest and there were two other heart attacks reported by the city's Fire Department yesterday, the Times said. The Road Runners said that the last marathon-related deaths were in 1994, when two men, ages 27 and 50, died of heart attacks. Professional marathoner Ryan Shay also died the day before last year's marathon during the United States Olympic Trials.
